Lone Holiday Poem by Bill Galvin

Lone Holiday

Sorting and releasing
Boxes and memories;
Surrendering and ceasing
Dreams and futures;
Saving and seeking
Truths and certainties;
Discarding and leaving
Clothes and photographs;
Moving and stepping
Onward and forward,
Without her… with her gone.

There will be no christmas this year,
But… there will still be a new year.

It's almost over… these dusty corners clean;
This weaning from the past;
The severing from memories seen;
The savoring of our life still holds fast
Onto a heart that treasures the good amassed.

I can't wait for this December to be done;
It's for others to celebrate, it's their time, not mine.
I just need to be away; to be just one…
I understand; I don't mind; it's my hill to climb.

I save a few things here and there,
To show my eyes at some future date,
That there was lived a past where
We were friends, lovers, and soul mates.

I amble through her writing papers…
Her words still lift off the pages,
Like she wrote them only yesterday…
No number of wise books or sages
Can tell me what to feel this holiday.

Though there will be no christmas this year,
There will still be a new year…
Even without her… even with her gone…
Her memory will be shining in my heart,
As I move on… as I move on…
As I move forward from this home,
Without her… with her gone.

There may be no christmas this year,
But… there will still be a brand new year.
