Looking For The Squirrels, Shap Wells Hotel Poem by Sheena Blackhall

Looking For The Squirrels, Shap Wells Hotel

On Monday, it was too late for visitors to call
The squirrels were asleep in their squirrely homes

On Tuesday, I sat by the river, on a stone which said
Watch out for squirrels crossing
Like a warden looking for parkers in a no parking zone

On Wednesday, it snowed in April
Quite heavily.Squirrel no-show
Huddling over nuts or pork scratchings?

On Thursday I missed them by inches
‘You should have seen them!
You must have been looking in the wrong directions'

On Friday I watched them on Google:
‘Red Squirrels at Shap Wells Spa on the Blea Beck, Cumbria.
The colony is around 17 in number
Cared for by Shap Wells Hotel staff
And by countryside rangers.'

I should have tweeted the squirrels before I went
