Lord Of The Flowers. Poem by Michael Walker

Lord Of The Flowers.

Rating: 5.0

Last month I planted four roses
And a carnation outside the bedroom.
I had done the groundwork beforehand,
So it was not long before they bloomed.

The roses had scarlet and crimson flowers:
The carnation petals werepink and maroon.
I counted fifteenflowers this morning,
While the roses have faded like the moon.

I am like the roses these days;
My life has withered and faded like ink.
Yet one day, in the right soil,
I will flourish again.

11.

Spring has turned into a hot summer.
The four roses have grown and bloomed
Into shades of red including crimson,
While the white rose looks just as good.

The sight is like a reward when I get home,
For I have weeded the small plot regularly,
And watered the plants every morning or evening,
Noting their seeming desire to impress.

The carnation has wilted and withered,
With only one flower on it today,
A day when I feel like the roses;
Red is still my favourite colour.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I like gardening, though not excessively. I used to work in horticulture. I keep the garden strip weeded and water the flowers each morning. I find the carnation flowers attractive and beautiful.
A few crimson roses are now blooming.
I have now left that address, after eight years, and somehow I fear what might happen to the flowers-neglect and too many weeds.
