Mahabharata 18: Pain Of Mind Passeth To Body Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

Mahabharata 18: Pain Of Mind Passeth To Body

The pain spinning apart from mind
Heats up the flesh, body to grind;
The way an iron rod red hot,
Dipped, heats up the water in pot.

Here is the transliteration of the original verse:

mānasena hi duhkhenasharīram upa-tapyate |
ayah piņđena taptenakumbha-samstham iva udakam || vana 2-25 ||

This is what king Janak once said to pacify man's inner mind. He talked about mano-deha-duhkhābhyām, of bodily and mental (psycho-somatic)pains. Accordingly, bodily pains are caused by diseases, adverse circumstances, too much of strain, and by deprivation of things desired. The root cause of mental pain is infatuation/endearment and attachment. The world is virtually swept by these pains. This insight of the ancients on the body-mind link is noteworthy.

Dear Pathak sir, you have done right to well reveal the meaning of sloka from Mahabhart. Here you have hauntingly inscribed about body, mind and pain. Nice work.
