Mahalaya

Heralding the end
Of Pitr Paksha
And the beginning
Of Matri Paksha

Telling of
The silent steps of Bhagabati,
O, have you not heard
Bhagabati is coming, Bhagabati is...?

The white kaash-blooms,
The tiny heavily scented seulis
All splashed and sprinkled with
Dew drops and moisture
Telling of the arrival of Bhagabati.


O Singer of Rama!

I still remember it
The song of Rama,
The song of Krishna
That you sang
So much tearfully,
So much zestfully
Before you went away
In shambles?

I remember
Even in the rags
Being so distraught
You sang so delightfully
The song of Rama
Which but I could not feel it,
I could not know it!
