Scantily clothed, frail-man of wisdom
Lived spiritually as an ordinary citizen
Though a learned lawyer by profession
He preferred a nobler call and destination
Lived obscurely a life of humility
Abandoned riches for a life of simplicity
Roused a populace against colonial rule
Armed with non-violence stance as his tool
The Salt Walk, with a throng he led
To remind how, economically, a nation bled
Home cotton-weaving, he encouraged
Peaceful passive resistance he preached
Without fear or favour, he spoke boldly
Softly he spoke, the world heard loudly
For a nation's birth, he single-handedly led
For one nation of people; For Mother India's flag
Lost, the British colonials, packed and left
Jai Hind! Jai Hind! A resounding clamour heard
As her flag was first hoisted, her children cried
None can scarcely believe,
That such a man as this had walked on earth
Man of steely courage, stood a nation still
Watched Mother India labour and give birth
Royalties, leaders of world over
Bowed in respect, for one who did not cower
A people of a great democracy marched together
With a man of wisdom and of astute character
Uniting people of varied faith-following
He lived his own faith, witnessing
He was slain by one who had vile thinking
Noble son lost, for non-violently resisting
He loved his people
Loved, fathered a nation
Gave his life as an example
Of an un-christened Christian
Mahatma Gandhi Ji
Spirit lives on in many!
