Malabar Fish Poem by vatsa kakumanu

Malabar Fish

Rating: 4.2

I met a woman on the coast of Malabar
a classical south Indian of her time.
She was a typical lady in her late twenties not married yet.
Perfectly draped in a saree with her long hair carried away by wind.
That moment I stood still gaping at her,
as she walked along the coast on that dusky evening.
I started following her as she walked away,
I could feel the musky scent of her hair blowing on my face.
Once or twice she looked at me but never replied.
I used the least bait of all to communicate with her,
but she always managed with her silent looks.
Once she asked me why had I always followed her....
what a silly question? she was a woman whom every one wanted
I am the very man who seeks love; and then I proposed her.....
Thereafter she left with a smile on her face.
Days passed by but she never appeared at the shore
I thought she left me nothing but a war with me and a war inside me...
It was timeby then to leave that place and move on,
as a traveller I need to get home soon.....
On my way back at the outskirts of the village I saw her,
waving at me. I stood still and strange while she ran towards me.
In her the hungry haste of rivers.....
And in me......the oceans tireless waiting......
Both merged with a warm hug and a bit deep emotions.....
