Missing Mama (A Poem About Dogs) Poem by Jay Loring

Missing Mama (A Poem About Dogs)

I know you miss your mama,
I miss your mama too.
But mama's mama needs her now,
so, what are we to do?

For she must go and help her.
You know that's how it works.
And if we asked her not to go,
well, wouldn't WE be jerks?

Mama's go where they're needed most,
to bring a smile to sorrow.
And though she won't be home today,
there's always hope tomorrow.

The house is quiet with her gone.
No laughter fills the air.
It goes to show, there's quite a hole
to fill, when she's not there.

'Cause no one loves like mama.
And no one has that touch,
the soft caress, the warm embrace,
that we miss, oh so much.

So, each of us, in different ways,
is grieving in our heart.
The emptiness grows stronger still,
each day that we're apart.

We wander through the empty rooms
and wonder as we roam,
"How can it be a single soul
can make a house a home? "

But there's no doubt, I know it's true,
this change in atmosphere.
The joy, the magic - all are gone,
whenever she's not here.

With each new knock upon the door,
the dogs spring from their places.
I know they're hoping that it's her.
It's sad to see their faces.

I know the look, I know it well.
I see it in the mirror.
I close my eyes and strain to try,
and I can almost hear her.

They say, I think, it's sometimes good
for friends to be apart.
It makes you value them the more,
this one who holds your heart.

I know she's there to help her mom,
and so, for them I'll pray.
But all the dogs and I will cheer,
when Mama's home to stay!
