Modern Babel Poem by Binu Mathew

Modern Babel

Rating: 4.2

Like a crown of glory and the nation's pride you look there!
Pierced into the sky, the head invisible to men on earth,
The last epitome of man's pride on earth, I fear!
Could be the next target of His eternal wrath.

The corporate castle cast into the clouds scorns,
The heights of Taipei and the lights of Eiphel and
Resembles a heaven that houses hellish minds,
But not better than a structure on dunes of sand.

Oh! magnificent beauty! The metropolis' bride!
Too high you're to hear the cry of men starving,
Your vision, blurred with clouds and dust evade,
The sight of the poor and the lowly suffering.

Devilish designs develop when dollars drive the duke.
When pride grows like weeds and desire burns,
Like wild fire with ‘fuel' plenty, underground to take,
Towers on deserts and islands in the sea turns.

Burj, invite not His wrath to be another ‘Babel'!
Time immemorial tells tales of tragic destructions,
Of structures built on evil with heathen's label,
And all attempts to surpass His noble creations.

Watch the bees making hives and the birds nests,
Use the throne and the resources, serving humanity,
And prevent the pastors, preying on the poor like pests,
From predictions wild and absurd of impending calamity.
