More Than My Heart Can Bear Poem by Emma Atkinson

More Than My Heart Can Bear

I miss you more than my heart can bear,
More than a child misses their home,
Because, Dearest, I swear,
You have become like a home to me.
I find comfort in your eyes,
Where I see the sun as it rises each day.
I cannot bear to be away
From you light so long, so long...
Or go without hearing your voice that melds into laughter.
Like an ocean, it flows, and my heart chases after
The waves of your breathing.
I follow them until my own breath unites,
And I long, Dearest, for the nights
I may fall to sleep pillowed on your chest.
I have gone so long chasing dreams,
I have forgotten how to rest,
But the thought of being wrapped in your arms
Stills me,
Even as the yearning I feel
Burns within my heart with such fire it kills me.
Dearest, I miss you so,
More than you could ever know,
More than a man gone deaf longs for the echo of a song,
More than an orphaned child yearns to belong,
Because for once in my life,
I have found solace in another's heart.
I was a dove waking for the first time,
And this was the start
Of my flight in the endless horizon of your love.
For so long I had forgotten I had wings,
That I could fly.
Dearest, you unveiled the sky
As you called to me,and your smile breathed life into my lungs,
And I miss you so, so much,
I feel as if I should die.
Your absence hits me like a physical pain.
To think I should never see you again,
Dearest, is unbearable.
So I live each day grasping after the next
Until I can come home to you,
And find your arms and there rest.
