Mr. Lizard Poem by Alexander Beebe

Mr. Lizard

Mr. Lizard moves across the sand
in frequent spurts from plant to twig.
As if to hide and sneak about
from some offence that he has made.

He scurries north then scurries east
he tracks his path by looking back.
No apparent destination to his wander
just spurts and scurries in bursts like thunder.

Nothing like the ants near by who
seem to move in special order.
Mr. Lizard can't be bothered with
such organized and confining borders.

Mr. Lizard has some place to go beyond
the snares of his dessert floor.
But where that is he doesn't know
so he spurts and scurries to and fro.

When Mr. Lizard returns to his home
he suns upon a heated rock.
What tales to tell if one would listen
of wars and battles he has fought.

For such a noble creature Mr. Lizard
with green and pink and reddish hues.
The mere site of him should alarm his foes
with spurts and scurries to and fro.
