My Love Is Here To Stay Poem by gershon hepner

My Love Is Here To Stay

Although my mind appears to wander,
my love is here to stay;
there’s nobody of whom I’m fonder.
Declared this yesterday,
and will ad nauseam until
you know tomorrow, too,
that lovethoughts that today so fill
my heart will as true
forever as they’re now, when writing
what truly I believe:
I am your shadow, you my lighting,
this Adam’s only Eve.

Inspired by George Gershwin’s last song, “Our Love Is Here to Stay, ” shortly after I had told Linda that she was my light, and I her shadow. We had just been amazed by a letter our six-year old granddaughter Eve wrote to the editor of a Hebrew Bible, pointing out a typo on page 101, adding that her favorite story was that of Jacob and Esau, “because they forgive one another”.

It's very clear
Our love is here to stay;
Not for a year
But ever and a day.

The radio and the telephone
And the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies,
And in time may go!

But, oh my dear,
Our love is here to stay.
Together we're
Going a long, long way

In time the Rockies may crumble,
Gibralter may tumble,
There're only made of clay,
But our love is here to stay.
