My Utopia Poem by Lacey UnKnown

My Utopia

Rating: 3.5

I wrote this poem as an English assignment for my British Literature class. We are studying Thomas More and were told to write a description of our personal 'Utopia' I decided to write a poem... cuz that's what I do best. I'd really like to hear your opinions on this one.

Millions of people walking around
Never a fight and never a frown
Listen close, you’ll hear naught but song
Everyone singing, voices strong
No one worries about the quality
They only acknowledge they’ve been set free
Each note sung is gift to the Lord
Every song and every chord
We sing to the glory of the Almighty King
High in the mountains our voices ring

Religion is something that’s never required
In fact, it is seen as uninspired
We simply wish to love our God
And never consent to a façade
The fire burns inside us all
No man is ever seen as small

There is never a need for authority
When wickedness is such a minority
It’s God’s place to judge and condemn
Who are we except mere men?
We've grown so close to our Heavenly Father
That sinful human nature is never a bother
With hearts of flesh and not of stone
We've been given a new nature, that of Christ as our own

A common tongue is of small concern
When God teaches all you need to learn
We learn about God all day and all night
We teach what is pure, what is holy and right
We lead by example and not just by words
For by little ears things are often unheard
But when those little eyes see the things we don’t know
That is when they all are most spurred to follow
They follow the actions of those older and wiser
And look up to their parents as their loyal advisors

The media here is quite nominal
But the music is truly phenomenal
We aren’t entertained by games and such
And watching TV is seen just as a crutch
To hide from the world and bask in your pity
Instead of praying and visiting the heavenly city
We spend our days having long talks with friends
Above all technology, interaction transcends
We won’t be distracted by gadgetry
Why be consumed in such earthly things?

Everyone constantly looks respectable
And modesty is always detectable
Indecency simply is frowned upon
And reserve is taught to kids early on
The clothes on our backs are all made by hand
And they are often thought to be rather grand

People are free to eat what they wish
Though most of the foods are home-grown and organic
Even our meat is all natural and fresh
It’s cooked on the grill, just seasoned flesh
We fill our maws with wholesome food
And blench at the thought of things pre-chewed

We do not believe in any monetary exchange
We all freely give, and we all freely gain
There is never a concern of going without
God always provides in the case of a drought
The closer we get to Him and ourselves
The easier it is to stock our shelves
There is never a worry, and never a care
When your life is filled to the brim with prayer

Divorce is one thing that is never an option
And instead of abortion, we promote adoption
A family is a family, and that’s how it stays
They stick together for all of their days
A family tie is the strongest of bonds
It is sure to stay tight, through all life and beyond
A woman loves a man until she’s hoary and old
The man cherishes the woman until with death he grows cold

To live a simple life is quite the ideal
Of this I am sure you can see the appeal
Knowing that God is everywhere
He always provides, He always cares
A strong feeling of unity rings throughout
A sense of security is brought about
Our three main goals aren’t all that odd
Live simply, live long, and live for God

I agree that the work is more a description of your ideals than an image of them, but images are so hard to create when you are dealing with a dificult subject like this. Remember, if it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it's a poem! Your ideas are heartfelt and profound, and well written. Thanks for sharing.

It's more a dissertation than a poem Lacy, nevertheless well crafted...
