No Cause For Pride Poem by Francis Duggan

No Cause For Pride

Though they may feel that they have the majority of people on their side
Governments who deny asylum to the stateless and dispossessed have no cause for pride
Refugee rights and human rights are one and the same
And to deny anyone of their human rights is a moral shame
War and famine refugees of the World their numbers every year multiply
Yet the Governments of some wealthy Countries asylum to them deny
This in fact is legal racism though many with this may not agree
How tragic and sad life is for every refugee
Treated as if they are bad criminals and held in detention for years
Instead of being afforded asylum they are reduced to tears
Millions of people in the refugee camps of the World of today
And from the shores of wealthy Countries boats carrying refugees turned away
People in need of asylum of such should not be denied
And governments of wealthy Countries who deny asylum to refugees do not have cause for pride.
