No Escape From The Metropolitan Jungle Poem by Paula Glynn

No Escape From The Metropolitan Jungle

I'm not in love as the saying goes
My own personal prison that I reside
With my long forgotten and wasted pride
Even my Internet profile a failure
All the years I made it happen
But now I am in the metropolitan jungle alone.

I carry the scars of my life wherever I go
The world has left me battered and bruised
Tired of the tears and the pain
And the vicious violence of the night
My soul beyond the once innocent fright:
My soul knowing inner truth.

Yes: there are shops, cinemas and theatres
But I don't want it: I don't want the concrete
However I must work for a living
I must pay all bills and fees that arise
The bills arriving like clockwork
Where my pain has to be forgotten.

The alarm will ring tomorrow morning
I will have a quick shower and go to work
The metropolitan jungle impossible to escape
But where would I run away to?
Who would change these inner blues?
Who would be able to walk in my shoes?

I could wear beautiful designer shoes
But the concrete would still hurt my feet
I could wear stylish and expensive clothes
But who would I impress?
Although I imagine a flamboyant white wedding dress
My future partner ecstatically happy to be with me.

I can plan to move to the Midlands in England:
I hear the countryside is calming and peaceful
That people love the busy and social farm life
All the while living in a friendly market town
Travelling in the car throughout the days and years
Where my home would be comfortable and enchanted.
