No Surprise Poem by Amanda Austin

No Surprise

I awake drenched in sweat with my breath cut short,
Relieved that it was just a nightmare
But when I roll over to see your resting body,
I realize that you're not there
I search around the room, hoping that maybe I'm wrong,
Hoping that you haven't left
But all I find is the clues left behind,
The ones that show you never went to sleep
I just lie here in bed awake and thinking,
When I hear your car just before sunrise
As I feel you quietly sneaking into bed,
I wonder to myself why this wasn't such a surprise
