Nobody's Dream Girl Poem by Em Jay Christian

Nobody's Dream Girl

You used to lay there,
Next to me,
And whisper someone else's name.
I assumed you couldn't help it,
No one can control,
What they dream.
As long as you thought of me,
In waking hours,
What more could I have asked for?
I have unfair expectations,
Just because all my dreams,
Were of you,
Didn't mean,
That you didn't love me,
Right?
Wrong,
Turns out you loved her,
Instead.
Well,
I guess that makes me a fool,
For not reading the signs,
Before.
For hiding from that pain,
I am,
The only one to blame,
You say.

I got over it eventually,
I moved on,
To other men,
But I couldn't shake,
That feeling.
And every morning,
With some new man,
I would watch him,
Before he'd wake.
And he,
Would wrap his arms around me,
And pull me close,
And mutter softly.
And open his eyes,
And I could see,
He wasn't muttering to me.
He had been expecting,
Someone else,
And I,
Was another disappointment,
Another waste of time.
I wasn't their,
On the stage of his mind,
While his subconscious,
Played a fantasy.
And when he woke,
To see me there,
The world came crashing back,
Down around me.
I am no body's Dream Girl
