Not Yet Trapped - Poem by Abdullah Ramadan

We are in a box
But not yet trapped

What did you do
When they told you
What to be

What did you do
When they told you
What not to be

We are in a box
But not yet trapped

Your destiny lies not there
They said
Your heart, merely misguided
They thought
Your will, is not your own yet
They claim

We are in a box
But not yet trapped

The walls,
They close in on us
We scrawl,
We will be
For we are I
and I am Me

I am in a box
BUT NOT YET TRAPPED

Poet's Notes about The Poem

This is based on the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, where the main character lives in a dystopian society where individualism does not exist and no one knows of the words 'I' and 'Me'.
