Obsession Poem by Linda Hepner

Whatever she says, whatever he sees,
whatever she touches, whatever we hear,
is changed in the depths of his coral reef seas
transmuting his words which scald her and sear,
volcanoes erupting from deep in the water
in which she fool plunges to put out the fire
causing a casual quick squall and some slaughter
just seen on the surface as fish floating higher
observed by the fisherman casting his net
with hardly a comment as where, why or who:
collateral damage, some god is upset;
but scarcely in time to interpret, construe,
observe that the fishes are words, he connects
the rumors reporting a woman was lost
in the surge of the wordrush, and probes and suspects
volcanoes erupting have snatched her and tossed
her hither and thither, deep drowned by the force
of nature more violent in power and range
than anyone dreamed in quotidian course
of their life unprepared for a sudden sea-change.
