Ode To Victor Hugo (66) 'the Miserable' the Bishop And The Brigands Poem by Freeyad Ibrahim

Ode To Victor Hugo (66) 'the Miserable' the Bishop And The Brigands

By Freeyad Ibrahim

The bishop arrived on a tour
The mayor urged him to turn back

The bishop said:
‘There is a humble community
in the mountains
they are friends of mine
they too must be in need
of someone to speak
to them of God.'

The mayor said:
‘But they are like a pack of wolves.'

The bishop said:
‘And perhaps that is why
Jesus has appointed me
To be their shepherd.'

The mayor said:
‘Merciful heaven!
I beseech you not to go.'

The bishop said:
‘I was not put into this world to
preserve my life
but to protect souls.'

There was nothing for it
But to let him go.
