Ode To Victor Hugo (8) her Meekness Raised To Saintliness

Her Meekness raised to saintliness
by Freeyad Ibrahim.

Baptistine was bishop myriel's sister
She was overwhelmed with sweetness
Though unpretty
She had acquired the beauty of goodness
She was spirit more than she was virgin
Nevertheless she never submitted to weakness
Her good nature had been her richness
It was a shred of matter harbouring a light
With large eyes
That were always cast down;
a pretext for a soul to linger on earth
That accept no frailty no wretchedness
With a lowered but delighted sight
She had been predestined to meekness
But faith, hope and charity
Those virtues
That enrich the soul
Had raised meekness to saintliness
Nature had made her a lamb
Religion had made her an angel of goodness
