Ode To Victor Hugo(24) -The Miserable (The Scaffold) Poem by Freeyad Ibrahim

Ode To Victor Hugo(24) -The Miserable (The Scaffold)

It has a profoundly disturbing effect
Leaving men in appaling and awe.
It is the ultimate expression of law.
It is not neutral
Nor does It allow us
to remain neutral.
We are seeing it
with our own eyes
Obliged to take our stand
Without hows or whys.
Our favour
for or against lies.
All social questions
Achieve their finality
and hope,
around that Blade.
It is an image
It is not merely a framework,
a mechanism,
of wood, iron, rope.
It is as though
it were a being
having its own dark purpose
To cut
To kill
As though it expressed
a Will.
It is a kind of monster
Created by the judge
and the craftsman
A real monster,
Not a mere lobster
