Of The Beauty I Knew Far Away Poem by Francis Duggan

Of The Beauty I Knew Far Away

I can see the meaning in Henry Lawson's poem on The Shame Of Going Back
Home with little money which does cause a lack
Of self worth which gives rise to a sense of low self esteem
I only say how a lack of money to many does seem

Looked on as a failure in and near Millstreet Town
Where i used to live when my hair was dark brown
Where some who knew of me of me would say
He does seem poorer now than before he went away

He must be one of Millstreet's greatest ever wasters of time
Decades of years penning doggerel rhyme
In his young years he was useless at hurling and Gaelic football
And useless at soccer good at nothing at all

Not good at making money his sort don't impress
People like him are strangers to success
We recall him as a dunce of the school
How come he did not stay far south near Warrnambool

Yet i do love those old fields i knew as a boy
And memories of them to me a source for joy
Nature than people means far more to me
From many others i think differently

Money in life is a thing of i lack
Perhaps to Duhallow i won't be going back
Here in the Moyne Shire for now i will stay
And write rhymes of the beauty i knew far away.
