Oh, Fair Maiden Poem by Roisin McNally

Oh, Fair Maiden

In the twilight I strolled through the misty woods
With the stars and moon arising above
The leaves rustled softly among the ground
And there was silence coming from the dove.

But then I heard a gentle sob
Flowing towards me in the breeze
Of a voice so gentle and soft
Coming from beyond the trees.

I look beyond a sycamore tree
To a stream beneath the starry night
And there I see upon a stone
A maiden of breathtaking sight

Her hair was as brown as the trunk of an oak
As was her brown and honey eyes
Her feet with on the river side
But that was not what gave me the surprise

She sat as if the Goddess of beauty
Her eyes made my heart race
But sorrow filled my heart with pain
As tears fell down her face

Why do you cry, oh, fair maiden?
Has your soul been torn apart?
Oh, beautiful girl by the stream
Has someone broken your heart?

Let me take you in my arms, fair maiden
Let me wipe away your tears
I’ll take you somewhere where you shall smile
I’ll chase away your fears.

Love at first sight was once a lie
But now I believe its true
Come with me, fair maiden, be my love
For my heart now belongs to you
