Oh Tell Me Not In Mournful Numbers

O tell me not in mournful numbers
That life is but an empty dream
Said thou yesterday
That's not what thou want
But dost thou know
What thou art looking for?
Will thou know when thou findeth it?
And will thou know then how to stop?

O tell me not in mournful numbers
The past is to blame
Tell me not that in vain
Tell me you'd strive
To stay on the path
Tell me you'd die than live in sloth
Tell me you've had enough
Of living in slough in the buff

O tell me that these words touched
Where others have merely rebuffed
Tell me that thou hast been saved
Tell me so oh knight in the rough
Did a holy light cross thy path
Held thy fingers in the dark
And heavenly roads doth paved
For thou to wander out of thy cave?

O tell me not in mournful numbers
That life is merely full of pain
I refuse to believe its very plain
To every effort there is gain
Miniscule perhaps, but take heed
Life begins when once planted the seed
A gentle breeze just swaying the reed
While a mighty oak it breaks in two
