Old Joe The Poet Poem by Francis Duggan

Old Joe The Poet

Old Joe the poet long dead but not forgotten he was a character in every way
In his time feted as a local hero his songs are still sung in the town today
The life and soul of every local party local success in song he did celebrate
Not known Worldwide but locally quite famous in name he lives on as a local great
Old Joe the Poet he never fathered children and he was one who never had a wife
But he made love to a few local women and he was one who led a happy life
He liked his grog he laughed and he made merry and in the pub his poems he did recite
In his lifetime he penned thousands of verses and he lost account of how many he did write
Old Joe the Poet he was a nice old fellow perhaps the best liked person in the town
He never yearned for to be World famous he was quite happy with local renown
Some locals have become more widely famous but locally his legend reign supreme
He was born and raised and he died in the old town where he was always held in high esteem
He died many years ago in his late eighties when his better days in life had been long gone
Local grandparents sing his songs to their grandchildren and his legacy is destined to live on.
