On Hearing An Aussie Magpie Poem by Francis Duggan

On Hearing An Aussie Magpie

I could sit and listen to it all day long
The flute like music in the Aussie magpie's song
He would be a tenor in an avian band
The silver billed songster of this great Southern Land
In their breeding Season in the still of the night
I've listened to them sing in the moonlight
To proclaim their borders they sing all night long
I love the music in their flute like song
The beauty in their song their claim to fame
And piping shrike for them another name
On insects, slugs, smaller birds and mice they prey
To kill to live with them their natural way
They sing all year round as if every day is Spring
And I love them for the song they have to sing.
