On Ne Sait Jamais. (Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

On Ne Sait Jamais. (Translation) .

Il dansa avec l'herbe haute
un moment comme s'il se balancait
avec une femme. Nos barreaux de fusil
luisaient chauffes a blanc.
Lorsque j'arrivai a lui,
une aureole bleue
de mouches l'avait deja reclame.
Je tirai la photographie froissee
de ses doigts.
Il n'y a pas une autre facon
de dire ceci: Je tombai amoureux.
Le matin s'eclaircit encore,
sauf pour un mortier distant
& quelque part des helicopteres qui decollaient.
Je glissai la portefeuille dans sa poche
& le renversai, de sorte qu'il
ne baisat la terre.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poet Yusef Komunyakaa served in the Vietnam War, in which this poem is set. One of the enemy Viet Cong has been shot dead just before the American soldier reaches him. In a notable gesture of humanity, the poet puts the dead soldier's photograph back in his wallet and his pocket, and turns him over to face the sun, not the earth. The American feels brotherly love for his fallen enemy, not hate, so 'we never know'.
A very moving poem of the Vietnam War, in my opinion.
