One Golden Day Dear Dad Poem by Stephen Hollins

One Golden Day Dear Dad

Dear dad come and spend a day with me
just one day so we can truly be
you left too early dear old dad
so let's do the things we never had

I'm your 'golden smiley curly-haired boy
dreamt in your driving heart of joy
you saw me clear before I was born
my father my pop who I now mourn

Dear dad, I now invite you back…back
for this one day only to share the lack
7,14, and 21
Bring back lost times of missing fun

(7)
Teach me how to fish and ride a bike
within my worlds of play we hike
see me, hug me, hold me tight

(14)
Help me understand girls dear dad
share the affection for our mother you had
teach me how to love in mutual trust

(21)
Both fathers now, let's share a beer
be a mirror reflection for me
my wife's pain that you can see

Man, your life it was like a scrum
demand push and focus for everyone
you would not yield, holding onto that ball tight
pushing through guys twice your height

You worked so hard to set it free
and passed that rugby ball to me
Today I hold this emblem in my hands
I see the goal posts in outer lands

I kick that ball with all my might
Into this poem where I recite

‘Dad, now I finally behold
The purpose of your life-
Us kids we were your gold
and your ever-pregnant wife
