Panic Can Be Fatal

PANIC CAN BE FATAL

a death row convict,
was told: 'you will not be hanged,
but you will be pricked,
by a live king cobra's fangs,
whose poison, will cause death pangs. '

he sat much frightened,
on a heavy iron chair,
limbs tied and tightened;
a huge cobra, with fangs bared,
when brought close, at him, it stared.

face covered by hood,
he got ready, for quick death,
as best as he could.
his thighs were then, pricked in stealth,
not by cobra, hold your breath!

pricked by safety pin,
-convict thought, it was cobra-
he died for his sins,
it was like, abracadabra;
illusion can't kill, is blah-blah.

after post-mortem,
his tissues had snake-poison;
late Freud, might have beamed:
'convict's mind caused reactions,
that poisoned, God's sinner son.'

this is just story;
seeing cobra, convict panicked,
and end was gory;
Covid challenge, let us pick,
don't panic; Covid departs, licked.'
-
Sigmund Freud- founder of psycho-analysis; Austrian 1856-1939
death pangs- agony, anguish, excruciation
abracadabra- a word said by the magician while performing a magic trick

The story was written in the context of huge panic about Covid 19. Fear of Covid is more harmful than the disease itself. Many senior doctors have been repeatedly advising on this issue.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Today April 26,2021: Covid situation in India is alarming. Oxygen shortage in hospitals has led to many deaths. A lot of it due to negligence by the people themselves: not wearing masks, no social distancing, infrequent hand cleaning, collecting in huge crowds during election rallies, Kumbh mela, watching cinemas in theatres, ... long list! Add to this vaccine shortage..Quite explosive. Best possible counter measure is to stay locked up at home, don't stir out; go and get vaccine shots as soon as available.Be alert.But don't panic!
