Parent And Grave Poem by gershon hepner

Parent And Grave

Our parent which becomes our grave,
time always leaves us in the lurch,
impossible to slow or save,
frustrating us, although we search
for ways to cause it to stand still
or slow down when we’re happy, and
does not come to a halt until
we’re buried, or in Wonderland.

Inspired by words from Shakespeare’s “Pericles, ” cited by Ben Brantley in a review of “Pericles” at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Garrison, NY:

I see that Time’s the king of men
For he’s their parent, and he is
The grave
And gives them what he will, not what they crave.
