Petrichor Poem by Kelly Boutin

Petrichor

We took shelter when it started
Thankful the doubt was finally over
The land so thirsty drank it's fill
But then it flowed over
We watched the little streams gather into a river
Outside our shelter
Rained dripped from above us onto our shoulders
But it wasn't cold rain at all
All around us the world was whispering
Welcoming the drops with open eyes
For so many months the dust had gathered in the skies
We couldn't even cry
But these are the stages like fall and spring

That makes us always remember there is more
So we breathe deeply the air isn't dusty
Just the beautiful smell of the earth, petrichor
I ask you if you remember this dream I had
When we were together after the sands
The winds whisper after, drowning our laughter
A dream within a daydream, a vision of an alternate past.
