Ph: Poetry Writing: Humour: Poet's Mouth Poem by Brian Johnston

Ph: Poetry Writing: Humour: Poet's Mouth

Rating: 5.0

I feel sure mine's a true case of ‘Poet's Mouth'
My fans certainly are precocious,
My goodness, oh they think I'm divine
They are all itching to be my Valentine.

I feel sure mine's a true case of ‘Poet's Mouth'
My words like rare jewels are so precious,
My rhythms like wild bats fly so free
Folk's hearts skip a beat when they listen to me.

I feel sure mine's a true case of ‘Poet's Mouth'
My thoughts like fresh snow truly pristine,
My rhymes like holy water quite pure
This confluence shining because I'm demure.

I feel sure mine's a true case of ‘Poet's Mouth'
My insights are really infectious,
My verse filled with poetic debris,
If I wrote free verse they could weaponize me.

I feel sure mine's a true case of ‘Poet's Mouth'
For high honor I'm certainly fit…..
How perfect if the first could be me….

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Brian Johnston

If you would like to give this poem a rating, please do so in a comment that is separate from your regular comment if you leave one. Many poets, including myself, have been experiencing visits from hard to identify PH members who like to damage other's poem's ratings with illegal multiple votes of 1.0 and make a mockery out of normal voting. You voting in a comment field helps me to protect your rating of my poem which they wish to destroy. I know that this is a bit of extra work for you, but believe me it is appreciated.

Poet's Notes:
This was actually quite a fun write. The goal was to have the egotistical poet (who is really totally devoid of any humility at all) to build himself up with phrases that actually have double meanings and increasingly show how vain (and dumb) he is, getting worse and worse as you get further into the poem. The 4th stanza is supposed to be a major clue that the whole poem is a satire on the poet's ego! ?

The title, Poet's Mouth is also a play on a common phrase, 'Potty Mouth' describing a person who has a foul mouth and is always swearing to bring attention to himself. It is also a barely veiled reference to an actual disease, 'Hoof and Mouth Disease' in cattle (a real disease) , and 'Foot in Mouth Disease' (a merely humorous affliction but still possibly contagious) in humans.

So contrary to what some of you might have been thinking (at first) this is not a poem about me (unless I am really, really stupid) ! : -)

Dear Sir, this is in fact in the case of so many literary persons. But a real poet is surely a humble one. thanks for nice efforts!

Oh, yes, I've seen these symptoms before....you have definitely come down with a most egregious case of Poet's Mouth. But luckily, it will pass quickly and it's not contagious. Ha! Very clever poem, Brian. I love it!
