Physics 06 - Bose Einstein Statistics Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Satyendra Nath Bose was a young Indian physicist from Kolkata (Calcutta in his days) .

Bose derived Max Plank's law of black body radiation treating the radiation as if it were a cloud of gas and applying statistical method to analyse it. This was a fundamentally new approach and the work of genius. He concluded that any two photons that had the same energy state were absolutely indistinguishable from one another. In theory as well as physically. This warranted that they should not be treated separately in statistical calculations. Bose sent this paper to Einstein for his consideration.

Einstein received it with great enthusiasm and got the paper published. He also extended the theory with three papers of his own, in which he applied Bose's method to actual gas molecules. This method was later called Bose-Einstein Statistics. Thus was born the new branch of quantum physics, Quantum-Statistical Mechanics.

Totally unexpected, there came up an amazing sequel, which puzzled even Albert Einstein. We will see it in the next chapter.
