Poetry For Children: Rain Stops Play? ! ©

I woke up early this morning,
and I wasn't even yawning;
Bright, refreshed, all set to play,
My football match is on today!

The sun decides to hide his face,
behind a cloud, without a trace;
Ma frowns and looks up at the sky,
And then the rainclouds start to cry...

Huge tears of joy, fat tears of mirth,
tumble down to wash the earth;
Roaring laughter comes with thunder,
Lightening fills my heart with wonder.

Coach grins and shouts to us, 'Let's play!
We're going to have some fun today! '
And on we rush upon the field,
Mum and Dad under trees concealed.

The football field is one big puddle,
our team locks into a joyful huddle;
We plot and plan our strategy,
The whistle blows and we break free!

I race into the blinding sheets,
destined for great heroic feats;
I'm center forward, tough as nails,
You know just what this game entails!

I'm tackled, crash and hit the mud,
in a squishy, sploshy muddy thud;
I make my way out, with the ball,
responding to some inner call..

I can feel mud inside my nose,
in my eyes and in my toes;
Such warpaint on my ruddy face,
makes my heartbeat start to race.

I block a tackle once again,
weaving through the drops of rain;
Mindless of the icy breeze,
Onward though I almost freeze.

Mind on my goal, my soul on fire,
I dream of Pele to inspire...
Full focus as I try the trick,
and execute a neat bicycle kick!

What utter joy! What pure delight!
I kick that football out of sight!
Far into the waiting goal,
and then we all just lose control..

We dance to see the magic score,
Our rain dance makes it rain some more;
We whoop and jump and splash for joy!
To think they fell for our decoy!

Ma waves her hands frenetically,
she's almost soaked as much as me!
Dad is pleased and proud as punch,
I think he'll take us out to lunch!

What a match! What a glorious day!
Whoever said that 'rain stops play? '!
