Postpartum Depression (Misinterpreted Baby Blues) Poem by D.N. Rebb

Postpartum Depression (Misinterpreted Baby Blues)

Rating: 5.0

(Sung to the tune of Subterranean Homesick Blues)

Mama's got an ailment
Cradling her precious son
Such new engagement
Where's pure blissfulness she once dreamt
Just dull lump in her throat
Lash out, cries oft
And yet babe feels so soft
Knows this is a one-off

Baby Blues did
The bible forbid
Had no friend
To share her own defense
Just make it throughout another day
With this resenting trend
No one loaned some crucial map
Made by some man
With eleven years of skill
Ten in some sealed pen

Mama's come unhooked
Used to be so good
Nothing was underfoot
Old fears were discussed
Routine like any day
Now with some emphasized weight
Dense dark cloud won't go away
Who needs an attorney?

Baby Blues did
Criticism forbid
Though intention knows
Of broken vows
That none-the-less decompose
What does subjective judgement impose?
And hatred grows
Herself, she loathes
For sadness she did not plan
Failure she could not disclose

Dear, why cry, why tell
While living in this hell
Before last farewell
Motherhood deserves a Nobel
Stay charged, not scared
On track, not failed
Ship's sailed, tell tale
Find a familiar trail

Baby Blues did
Don't you dare yet quit
You can still beat this
Good sense refuses
Clear victory occurs
Easily pass this quiz
No need to go to school
Avoid the preachers
Look at baby's features

You've been warned, dodge storm
Advance, goal chance, zero rants
Express, digest
It's time to get re-dressed
Get hold, get help, heart lifts
Just stay adrift
One will ask how you've been
As they look at your healing wrists

Baby Blues did
You were once so thrilled
When you thought you had control
Hoped you had a handle
Change the channel
Depression are the vandals
But you are now a mom
Lullabies to hum
Sadness that lurked
Small samples of human shambles
