Materialistic Prometheus Poem by D.N. Rebb

Materialistic Prometheus

Rating: 5.0

With eyes wide open
Leering the acoustical ceiling
Unable to communicate
Counting every hole in each tile
The only sound
The beep from the monitor
Constantly reminding
Almost mocking
Like fingernails
On a chalkboard
Scratching, then stopping
Then again scratching
Too weak to cry
Yet the pain's gone
Thirty-four years at the power plant
Alcohol and cancer
Destroyed the liver
Now only time
And more time
Daily suggested doses
If it could only stop
Let me feel blessed death
Intravenously prolonged
As I here lie,
Like an injured dog,
Like a tattered rug,
Like a used tissue
That missed the trash
Humane tradition?
For whose purpose?
The door opens
The eagle enters
The cycle upholds
