Powerless Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Powerless

Strong winds send trashcans colliding
Waking restful sleep with apprehension
Sideways sheets of sleet are riveting the siding
Spiking nervous expectation with tension

Exhausted branches strain and crack
Accelerating gusts are merciless
Streetlights suddenly gasp and go black
Lifeless…in the midst of relentlessness

Safe inside…thankful…yet confined
Plunged into a subservient plight of numbness
Dulled senses guide the blinded mind
As a match lights the candle of humbleness

Dancing shadows quickly absorb and dilute
The limited resource… restricts confidence
A chill of inadequacy surrounds and stands mute
Sanity is wrapped and layered by inconvenience

Restoration of an electrical flow is waited upon
Patience is wearing thin… endurance is leaking lean
The sun emerges briefly as drifting clouds travel on
It is the most encouraging sight recently seen

A promise has been given… relieving desperation
Nightfall will be glowing with warmth and cheer
A quiet celebration of appreciation is in formation
A heavy sigh confirms that comforts have reappeared
