Progression Of Self Poem by Wilma Horne

Progression Of Self

Rating: 2.5

As she looks
Into the starry sky
She remembers
Days gone by

In her mind's eye
She sees the way
It used to be

The days when he loved her
When everything was right
And love
Love was all she needed

The scene changes
To when everything
It all went wrong

The fights, lies, and hate
That made her walk away
And seek out
The love of a stranger

To when she kept searching
For something, anything,
To fill the void in her heart

She saw the booze
The men and the drugs
That brought her nothing
Nothing but temporary relief

Her vision changed
Once more
To her nightmares

All at once
She saw herself
Heading towards
The point of no return

She saw the needle marks
The cuts and bruises
That marked her body

Her eyes fill with tears
As, with movement from inside,
She decides to change
To make her life anew

With a heavy heart
She takes one last look
At the stars above

The she walks away
One last time
Not with bitterness or anger
But with hope

And a desire
To find
True love once more
