Rating: 5.0

Quand j'entendis l'astronome savant,

-' When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer'.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
See the English on Poem Hunter/ W. Whitman/379/393.
Typically, Whitman has written this poem in long, relaxed free verse lines. He attended a lecture on astronomy, full of facts and figures that tired him, making him feel ill. He went outside alone and looked up at the stars, which was much better than the lecture. There was perfect silence, not sickening applause, and he was alone.
That is why this poem appeals to me.

A poet is not impressed by the dreary facts about nature around him. He is rather at ease and in harmony with nature itself. Great write by Walt Whitman. Thanks a lot, Michael.

Glad you liked this Rajnish. The credit is all due to Walt Whitman not me.
