The iconic Flanders poppy flower
is blood-red with a black cross at its centre.
A pure one is rare.
The variation, in which the cross has white tips,
but which otherwise conforms to The Icon,
I call The Disappointment or The Hope -
it depends.
And I call it The Contingent too,
and The Make-Up-Your-Mind -
it's more common than The Icon, you'll find.
