Redundant Poem by DR KUSUMITA MUKHERJEE

Redundant

A burdensome human
Eyesore of her own family.
A perfectly normal human yet an undesired child.
She can incur only financial loss without endowing any material gain.

Why educate her?
Why waste money?
More importantly why let her know her intellectual capability?
Let her stay in the shadow of the household.
Let her blossom in negligence and darkness.

Every measure is taken to ensure the withering of her.
Teaching her from birth to learn but not to question;
Obey but not command
Not even her sons.
Daughters? Yes.
If any daughter is permitted to be born to her.

Infanticide is intricate;
Risky business.
Screening the gender before birth easier.

Bribe to get rid of the future bride who will take away without giving any.
Kill the womb that could have birthed.
Murder the blessed counterpart chosen to bring life on earth.
To save money;
To forgo the dowry.
