Retreating Ahead Poem by Bryan Taplits

Retreating Ahead

Don't know why I do it-
I'm going to give it another try,
…But I can't help whenever I think of you
To heave out another sigh.
No matter whether we're good or bad-
With emotions that just let fly,
I just can't repeal the way I feel-
And instinctively
Cast out another sigh.
I'll never know just what I do
that causes you to gasp then cry,
But this I know,
through my lingering soughs,
Every one of my"sorrys"
is punctuated with a sigh.
In essence, then, no matter when our angers flare-
In arguments battered on both sides-
Though ever retreating I still hold my bugle high-
I always blast forth an enfeebled rejoinder-
And I always end with a grateful sigh.
