Rivers 05 - Saraswati Saves The Universe

Rating: 5.0

Padmapuranam
A terrible battle was fought between
the Hehayas and the Bhargavas;
the fierce weapons they used
against each others produced a fire
called Badavagni, that threatened
to consume the entire universe.

Beseeched by the Devas,
Brahma directed Saraswati
to deposit the fire in the ocean.
Saraswati, carries the Badavagni
to the ocean, on her way
rested at lake Pushkar Lake
finally reached the ocean
and complied with Brahma's bidding,
thus saved the Universe
from the impending disaster.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This story tells us that Saraswati flowed through today's Rajasthan, because Pushkar Lake exists even today, near Jaipur, Rajasthan, where there is one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Brahma. The fire cited in the story should be a severe draught that Saraswati's waters quelled. Maybe that draught which threatened the very existence of the Harappan Civilisation was the beginning of the Thar Desert and the end of River Saraswati. This also warns us of the disastrous consequences of wars.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

River Saraswati was one of the most important rivers on the banks of which the Harappan civilisation flourished. When finally the river vanished, vast areas of the riverbank had turned into desert
