Sacrifice Poem by Namita Rani Panda

Sacrifice

I hated the lady who was my mom.
With her one eye she was ugly and worn.
Doing errand to run our home
she was always in tattered and torn.
One day she came to my school,
I threw at her a glance so hateful.
That night with her one eye she cried a lot
but I was so rude that I did not regret.
One night I left my home
being disgusted with my ugly mom.

Days passed in leaps and bounce.
I became an officer with heavy allowance.
I settled with my sweetheart in a big town,
with all the luxuries and a building of my
own.
But one day unexpectedly my mom
appeared.
Looking at her one eyed face my little
daughter fainted.
Rudely I ask, "How dare you scare my little
princess?
To my house how dare you trespass? "
She said timidly, "I came to know that you
are here dear,
I just want to have a glance of my little
granddaughter."
I retorted, "I don't know who you are,
immediately you get out from here."
"I'm sorry. I'm at the wrong address."
She hid her tears and left the place.

The next day while returning from the office,
at my gate I found my mom lying lifeless.
She was holding a folded letter
wet with her warm tear,
"You are my life, you are my breath.
I can now die a peaceful death.
But before I leave let me tell the truth.
In your childhood you met with a mishap.
You lost one of your eyes and became
handicap.
I could not stand up you to grow up with
one eye,
so I donated you one of my eyes.
I wanted to see half of the world,
so that you can see the whole of the world.
You happily bid me good bye,
never shed tears to give pain to your eyes."

Since that day my eyes have turned into
perennial rivers,
I can never repay the sacrifice my ugly
mother,
as it was too late for me to realise that none
can substitute a loving mother.
