Sans Denomination.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

Sans Denomination.(Translation) .

Sans denomination
Mais encore l'eglise de Dieu
Il se tenait debout dans son conventicule
Et le reglait d'une verge.

Sans denomination
Les murs s'elevaient autour de lui,
Les lampes dans ses bras chancelaient
D'entendre les hymnes qu'il choisissait.

'Gloire' 'Evangile' 'Place Russell'
'Luttant Contre Jacob''Roc'
'Walden Safran' 'Sauf a la Maison'
'Dorking''Bassin de Plymouth'

Je me glissai autour de la ruelle crayeuse
Qui court au-dehors du parc,
Je vis le conventicule tout seul
Une phare dans l'obscurite.

Le retablissement courait le long de la haie
Et rendait entier mon esprit
Quand la vapeur etait aux carreaux
Et la gloire dans mon ame.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem Hunter/John Betjeman/ life/ poems.
The Christian church which he writes about is undenominational, and the congregation assemble in a conventicle, a meeting place for religious dissidents. The preacher ruled here with a rod of iron, and chose old-fashioned hymns. The poet saw the conventicle from a lane outside the park; it looked like 'A beacon inthe dark'. In a striking image, 'Revival ran along the hedge' (religious revival, especially Protestant) , and made his spirit whole, 'When steam was on the window panes/ And glory in my soul'.
I think that the idea of an undenominational Christian church is a positive one, and it could lessen religious bigotry.I think that youth is the time when you can feel glory in your soul. That has been my experience.
I like the poem and, in particular the line, 'Revival ran along the hedge'.
