Savage Beast Poem by Eyes Ofsole

Savage Beast

I jumped and on the turn of the neck I spotted it.
It was all I heard it was and more, my eyes lit

A true sight of disgust, I was in no way prepared.
Its unusual corpse, I presumed the sight its rear
How God works, only God knows. Who else would?
Would bring to the world a thing so powerful with no more emotion than wood
It bore layers, kaki and mucus coloured layers of tissue, flailing in most odd manner
On its head, there was tissue resembling the other

Their limbs and necks were exposed, uncovered. Unfamiliar.
Each creature took different colors but looked all too similar
One was a mix of beige and cream with brown hairs layered across each arm and leg,
With patches mimicking mud stains unevenly spread across its neck.
The other had a color of ebony in fine blend with pasty dark mud,
Both stood upright facing in opposite directions. O thug!

The scenery was one I wished on no one
Yet one so unheard of, so strangely fascinating, for that instant it had me won

One turned and faced me and all went into blur
I turned to scream..ROARRRRR
The river’s cold and engulfing water was at first much a shock
A few seconds dazed before I ran to the rock,
Then took the three biggest steps of my life to the nearest tree
Then vanished into the forest and could only hope that they would believe me.
Too close to death. I saw its eyes and its stare.
It was going to send the stings of torment. O the air,
It was still. Nothing was more alive than me.

Sam: Terry mate, something spectacular you just missed!
Terry: Why what have you seen? ?
Sam: The grizzly, into the river he flipped.
Terry: I still wonder why anyone would want to kill such a being.
Sam: Man I love these camouflage outfits!
