School Prayers Poem by Randy McClave

School Prayers

I remember when we had school prayers
And I still remember the looks and the glares,
After we all said prayers in school
Many of the students were still mean and cruel.
I still remember to way back then
While in school we prayed for help and for our sin,
I remember when the blacks drank from a different fountain
And they had to always climb a different mountain.
I also remember running home after school
And the meanest other students did always pull,
They mocked and they judged others differently than them
Especially the kids they enjoyed to mock in gym.
I remember when students got into fights
I still remember how the fury ignites,
When a child got a school lunch always for free
They always belittled and bullied them in every degree.
They laughed and mocked at the children who wore old clothes
Unto them they'd hold their nose,
I still remember all the hurting and evil name calling
Which was also very hurtful and appalling.
I also remember when students pretended to say a prayer
To say and to believe in one they never did care,
At their homes they never prayed or owned a Bible
They said they didn't need it for their survival.
I still remember saying my prayers in our home room
While some students laughed and others sprayed perfume,
I still remember in school with a prayer we did praise
Those indeed were the good old days.
