Scream Of The Ewes Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Scream Of The Ewes

(Ewes only scream when lambs are taken from them)

Flock of sheep munching grass on hillside
Mothers with prancing lambs in sunshine
Happy, carefree, joyous together, caring.
Days sweet and full of love, so precious
Lambs thinking it never ends, always together.
Men arrive to catch and haul the lambs away
Taken from ewes for slaughter to be human food.
Lambs, three months old, lives cruelly cut short
Mothers in desperate panic scream out in anguish
Against loss of cherished lambs, shrill, piercing
Never to munch grass together again on the hillside
Lambs killed and butchered for human consumption.
Only time ewes scream with hearts broken
Loss of lambs, hauled away terrified to the abattoir.
