Self-Centeredness Poem by Tor Magnor Solvang

Self-Centeredness

My world was me, a tiny sphere,
Where others served, and held me dear.
I took their help, with no kind word,
Just wanted more, felt quite absurd
When they were tired, or couldn't give,
I thought, 'This isn't how to live! '

Their troubles felt like their own fault,
Why should I step out of my vault?
My own sad story, I would tell,
Trapped in a self-made, angry spell.
A bitter taste, a constant ache,
For goodness sake, for goodness sake!

But then a light began to gleam,
A different path, a waking dream.
To give a hand, to simply share,
To lift a burden, ease a care.
No thought of thanks, no looking back,
Just kindness on a lonely track.

And as I gave, the chains grew weak,
The selfish thoughts began to creak.
A quiet peace began to grow,
Humility, a gentle flow.
The need to drink, it slipped away,
With helping hands, each brand new day.
